Phil's nickname was "Iwo Jima Phil" around the VFW posts in Central Oregon. While in his eighties, he served on the Honor Guard, Color Guard and Rifle Squad for many veterans' funerals and memorials, including L/cpl Randy Lee Newman's memorial. Phil was always one of the first to volunteer to honor veterans. It was always a great honor to serve with Phil on these detachments. He taught all of us who knew him the meaning of selfless duty and honor. I lovingly called him "Dad".
